More details on giant hole in ozone

03-10-2011

Scientists have disclosed further details about a giant hole in the protective ozone layer in the Arctic's upper atmosphere that matched those found regularly over Antarctica.

They say the hole, lasting several months earlier this year, measured five times the size of Germany and that people in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Mongolia were potentially exposed to higher levels of ultraviolet light, which can lead to skin cancers and cataracts.
