Residents of the village of Wu
Kan in Guangdong have elected
new representatives after
mounting an open revolt
against local officials last
year. Eighty percent of the
village's population was
reported to have turned out to
vote for representatives
who'll approve candidates for
a final election in March. The
residents caused a sensation
last year when they rose up
against corrupt land deals and
expelled police and local
officials.
