The rapid increase in high speed ferry operations over the past decade has been blamed for a big drop in the number of Chinese White Dolphins. The Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society said the population has halved during that period.

A survey last year put the number in waters around Lantau Island at about 78. The Society's chairman, Dr Samuel Hung, said the government should consider diverting high speed ferries away from dolphin areas.
