A Legislative Council subcommittee has approved the creation of a temporary post of Assistant Director at the ICAC, to prepare criminal proceedings
against the former chief secretary, Rafael Hui, and Raymond and Thomas Kwok
- the co-chairmen of Sun Hung Kai Properties - on bribery and misconduct in
public office charges.
The post would have an annual salary of around HK$1.6 million and would be effective for 30 months from the 12th of next
month.
The ICAC already has four assistant directors, but its chief Simon Peh told
lawmakers it wasn't feasible to allocate the case to them due to their
workload.
Emily Lau - a member of the subcommittee - says it's vital the
case is properly resourced.
She said their party supported the application because it was a major case that it would drag on for a long time.
The government will seek funding for the new ICAC post from the Finance
Committee later.
