The Society of Hospital Pharmacists has called on people over the age of 50 to get early vaccinations against shingles. It says there is low awareness of the disease, and not treating it correctly could be expensive and harmful. Dr Yip Wai-man, a geriatrician in private practice, said if this was not done, a patient could go through a distressful and painful experience. The President of the society, William Chui, said proper treatment starts with anti-viral drugs. A vaccine should then be administered.
