The annual outdoor symphony extravaganza – “Symphony Under the Stars" – will be held at the Central Harbourfront on November 16 and 17. This year, for the first time, there will be two performances, so more music fans can enjoy the lovely music under the stars.

The end of open-cast lignite mining in the Lausitz region of eastern Germany left behind vast areas of wasteland – in which habitats teeming with rare plant and animal species have come into being. Wolves, cranes and sea eagles, as well as insects, amphibians and birds, have taken over the former pits and spoil heaps. Wetlands, heath and forests have become fascinating objects of study for conservationists and biologists.

Japanese Zen monk Kanho Yakushiji is known for taking Zen-inspired music to a worldwide audience. His music videos have earned over 50 million views. He was in Hong Kong for a one-night concert late last month as part of an Asia tour. We went to speak to him. Sherine Wong once competed in track and field events at the Asian Junior Games. She’s been the winner of the Ms Malaysia Universe competition and has also worked as a model, but she says her true passion is music, particularly jazz. Two years ago, she joined us to introduce her duo concept album “Two For the Road”. Her new album is “3 & More”, and she’s here with three and more of her musician friends to tell us more.

First held in 1906, the Harbour Race is one of Hong Kong’s most celebrated sports events. This year, the race will feature 4,000 swimmers traversing a 1 km course, from Wan Chai’s Golden Bauhinia Square to Tsim Sha Tsui’s Avenue of Stars. Another highlight is the 11th Asian Open Water Swimming Championships, making a long-awaited return after a 12-year hiatus, with competitors vying in a challenging 5 km race.

On the subject of games, Mahjong is perhaps one of the most traditional strategy games in existence. To help Mr Markam better understand the artistry of mahjong craftsmanship, Maisy will ask Master Cheung, who has been working as a mahjong tile carver for over 50 years, to guide him in creating a Malaysian-themed mahjong tile. Did you know that a time-honoured medicated oil, which is a household essential in Hong Kong, actually originated in Malaysia? As residents of our city, Mr Gan and his son – the brand’s third- and fourth-generation successors – combine the Malaysian human touch with the adaptability of Hongkongers to devise their own unique business strategy.

Dancing is a sport and leisure. It can also be a self-discovery journey. On weekdays, Arya Jackson is an Indonesian domestic helper. On Sundays, Arya puts on her dance costumes and takes up another role – leader of an Indonesian dance group, the Jackson Dancer. All six members of the group are “Indonesian helpers”. They came from different dance groups and were even competitors on stage before. Yet, their talents have brought them together. Arya has left her home in Indonesia and started working overseas for over 20 years. She came to Hong Kong 17 years ago. To Arya and the dancers, Hong Kong is the place where they work. It is also the place where they have spent most of their youth. Here in Hong Kong, they have found another way of life, a space and a stage that is not available back home. They also get to learn afresh and even promote the culture of their homeland.

Food waste constitutes the largest portion, accounting for 30%. Enhancing food waste recycling and reducing disposal have become inevitable challenges for households, restaurants, food manufacturers, and others. The government has been gradually expanding the food waste collection network, including the trial use of smart food waste bins in public and private housing estates. How effective has it been in cultivating citizens' habits of food waste recycling? Are the technologies and facilities ready to handle the large amount of food waste collected?
