Backchat
Backchat
On Tuesday's Backchat, we're looking into the highlights of this year's COP29 climate conference, which concluded at the weekend. After two weeks of negotiations, members agreed to a yearly financing goal of US$300 billion from 2035, to support developing nations reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for extreme weather. The funds are expected to be drawn from public and private sources of richer countries. The meeting was full of controversy, with critics arguing that Azerbaijan should not have hosted the summit, citing the oil producing country's climate record. This year's summit came just two weeks after the victory of US President-elect Donald Trump who is expected to take a step back from climate agreements. We'll be talking about these and other main talking points around the meeting, and asking whether the financial commitment is enough to support poorer countries fight climate emergencies? After 9:45, we'll learn more about how NGOs are preparing to help the disadvantaged cope with plummeting temperatures. 9:05am-9:45am: COP 29 climate conference 9:05am-9:30am: Prof Christine Loh, Chief Development Strategist at the Division of Environment and Sustainability at HKUST and former Under Secretary for the Environment 9:05am-9:45am: Prof Paul Harris, Chair Professor of Global and Environmental Studies, The Education University of Hong Kong 9:30am-9:45am:Ho Wai-fun, Programme Manager at Carbon Care Innolab 9:45am-10:00am: Cold weather and the elderly 9:45am-10:00am: Rebekah Lam, Centre Director, Saint Barnabas’ Society and Home
