    Goodbye, Mr. King

    Goodbye, Mr. King

On Saturday 6th July, Radio 3 lost a great friend, and Hong Kong lost a legendary broadcaster.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce, after a period of illness, the passing of Peter King, a cherished voice in the world of radio broadcasting. Known for his smooth delivery and warm presence behind the microphone, Peter's career spanned over four decades, leaving an indelible mark on listeners everywhere. Peter’s radio career took him all over the world, but Hong Kong was his home. He has been a regular voice on Radio 3 since the early 1980s, most recently hosting our week-daily trip down memory lane, ‘Pete’s Magical Mystery Tour’. His modesty would never let him shout from the rafters about the people whose lives he touched each day, but he had many fans and listeners from several countries, who would write to him regularly to request a song or to just say “hi". Peter will always be remembered for his talent, and the warmth he brought to those around him, both on and off the air.

    We’ll all miss you, Pete.

Listen here to Annemarie Evans' touching tribue to Peter in Hong Kong Heritage, broadcast on July 13th 2024. As well as memories from friends and colleagues, plus some Radio 3 archive material featuring Peter, she also replays part of a fascinating conversation she had with him in 2018.

On Thursday’s Money Talk, Andrew Work will be talking markets with Ben Emons, Chief Investment Officer/Founder, Fed Watch Advisors and Enzio Von Pfeil, a capital preservation specialist at Financial Shield.

In Your Money, Carolyn Wright speaks to Kai Tang, Head of Hong Kong, Adyen, on how social media is driving consumer choices.

And with a View of the APAC Region will be Albert Park, Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank.

On Thursday's Backchat, we're talking about China's third plenum.

Chaired by President Xi Jinping, this important Communist Party meeting is reported to have been considering draft decisions on modernisation and economic reform. The meeting comes as China’s second quarter GDP growth fell to 4.7%, below the expected 5.1%.

This has been partly blamed on weak consumer demand and US and European export curbs. Businesses are hoping to see more stimulus injected into the economy, but finance authorities have erred on the side of caution and warned earlier this year that such measures could pose long-term risks.

So what should we expect from this meeting?

After 9:45, we speak to three top DSE students.
