On Thursday’s programme, we’relooking into the latest tourism blueprint. The government on Monday said it wants to nurture and develop tourism by focusing on culture, sports, ecotourism and mega-events, in a move to bring at least HK$120 billion into the economy.

Authorities aim to create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the next five years, while boosting the city’s appeal to travellers from the Middle East and ASEAN countries. There are also plans to encourage more people to take up jobs as tour guides, by strengthening cooperation with local universities.

Special edition: 2024-25 budget (part 1)

    主持人:Danny Gittings and Paul Zimmerman

On Thursday's special edition of Backchat, we're examining the 2024-25 budget.

Delivering his financial blueprint at the Legislative Council on Wednesday, the Financial Secretary Paul Chan announced a wide range of measures—from the much-expected removal of all remaining property curbs to the extension of tax concessions for electric vehicles, and $65 million to help develop Hong Kong into a green maritime fuel-bunkering centre.
However, there was a mixture of good and bad news about Hong Kong’s economy. Unemployment is down, while both economic growth and visitor arrivals are up. But so too is the budget deficit, which will surpass HK$100 billion this year—almost twice last year's forecast.
And although there are no plans for a sales tax, some other taxes are increasing, with the government planning to collect a 3% Hotel Accommodation Tax.

    We find out more.
