2024-25 budget review: lifting of housing curbs / Electric vehicle support measures

    Presenters:Andrew Work and Mike Rowse

On Friday's Backchat, we talk about the lifting of property curbs -- also known as "spicy measures".

Introduced over a decade ago to rein in speculation, the Special Stamp Duty (SSD), Buyer's Stamp Duty (BSD) and New Residential Stamp Duty (NRSD) are no longer needed to be paid when purchasing a home, in what the real estate sector hopes will attract more buyers. The measures were announced by the Financial Secretary Paul Chan on Wednesday.
Speaking on a Cantonese phone-in programme following his budget speech, Mr. Chan said that this is the right time to get rid of the levies, citing little speculative activity and adequate home supplies.
However, the minister highlighted that his administration would keep an eye on the market situation, and be ready to re-introduce the curbs if needed.
After 9:45, we'll gather views on the extension of electric vehicle tax incentives.
