Political turmoil in South Korea / Deepening rifts between US insurers and consumers

On this week's edition of Global Focus, we’re looking into the latest developments in Korean politics. President Yoon Suk Yeol is once again facing impeachment after surviving a motion tabled against him last week, over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law. In a defiant speech, the embattled leader vowed to “fight till the end”, and blamed what he called “anti-state forces”, referring to the opposition-controlled parliament.

The leader’s televised address came shortly after police attempted to raid the presidential office compound, as part of a probe leading to the arrest of key figures, including the country’s police chief and its former defence minister. Yoon himself is subject of a travel ban, with authorities not ruling out arresting the strongman if conditions are met.

In the second half of the programme, we’ll talk about deepening rifts between US citizens and insurance companies, following the assassination of an executive.

Hong Kong's road resilience in the face of extreme weather / Calls to accreditate sign language interpreters

    主持人:Jim Gould and Mike Rowse

On Wednesday's Backchat, we're talking about the impact of extreme weather on infrastructure.
A section of Clearwater Bay Road collapsed at the weekend, amid the heavy downpour which triggered landslides and caused flooding in several parts of the New Territories.
No injuries were reported, but the incident has again focused attention on the resilience of the territory's roads, with climate scientists warning that heavy rain storms will become a more common occurrence.
Authorities promised last year to improve drainage systems, but experts remain divided over the cost and feasibility of building new tunnels in rural areas.
How should town planners approach this challenge?
After 9:45, we discuss calls for accreditation of sign language interpreters, with some deaf defendants said to have been misinterpreted in court cases.
