Hong Kong airport development plans / Discussion with a local doctor back from Gaza

On today's Backchat, we're talking about developments at the airport.

In its annual report, the Airport Authority revealed that passenger traffic had reached 80 percent of pre-pandemic levels, with full recovery expected by the end of this year.
The numbers come as the three-runway system is poised to be commissioned around the same time, while the main terminal will be integrated with SKYCITY and Tung Chung through an autonomous transport system poised to start in 2028.
But despite the encouraging figures, it isn't all plain sailing. Speaking to local media, the authority's acting CEO Vivian Cheung warned that Russian airspace restrictions remained a hindrance, as Western carriers are banned from flying over Russia owing to sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine, leading to greater fuel costs.
How well is the airport's recovery proceeding? Is Hong Kong keeping up with the competition? How much of an impact do geopolitical conflicts have? We'll talk to the experts.
After 9:45, we speak to a doctor who just came back from Gaza.

Light Public Housing applications / Oyster shell recycling

    Presenters:Jenny Lam and Ada Wong

On Tuesday's Backchat, we're talking about light public housing.

Hongkongers who have been on the waiting list for a public flat for at least three years are now able to apply for one of the 4,400 modular apartments currently available, with an estimated 30,000 to be built by 2028.

The temporary flats will cost HK$740 to HK$2,650 per month to rent and are expected to help grassroots families currently living in subdivided accommodation enjoy better conditions while waiting to move into a public estate.

Authorities recently pledged to boost Hong Kong's public housing capacity amid criticism from different sectors that the SAR has not been doing enough to tackle housing problems. Is light public housing the answer ?

After 9:45, we learn more from a conservationist about new oyster shell recycling project. Call us any time on 2338 8266 and join the conversation. WhatsApp us on 6899 8518. Comment on our Facebook page. Or email backchat@rthk.hk
