Leadership crisis in France and Germany / Devastating cyclone in the French territory of Mayotte

On Friday’s Global Focus, we’re looking at the latest developments in the European Union.

From the collapse of the French government earlier this month to the dismantling of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition over a no-confidence vote, the two largest EU economies are facing an unprecedented leadership crisis, plunging the 27-member bloc into rising socio-economic uncertainty.
French President Emmanuel Macron is currently struggling on with a seemingly weak administration and without any budget for 2025, forcing lawmakers to roll over this year’s financial blueprint instead.
Meanwhile in Germany, early snap elections in February could significantly weaken the pro-EU camp, as the rising far-right AfD campaigns to reassess the country’s EU membership.
Are the European Union’s institutions strong enough to withstand this growing uncertainty? We’ll find out.
After 9:50, we’re talking about the devastating cyclone which ripped through the Comoros archipelago of Mayotte, France’s most impoverished territory.

UK elections / Accessibility issues faced by the blind

    主持人:Danny Gittings and Mike Rowse

On Monday's Backchat, we're talking about UK election results and what to expect from its new government.

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has become Britain’s new Prime Minister after his party’s landslide victory put an end to 14 years of Conservative rule.
Many leading Conservative politicians went down to defeat, including former Prime Minister Liz Truss. And Labour gained ground in Scotland, with the pro-independence Scottish Nationalists losing most of their seats.
The British Parliament will also see a new faction on its benches, as Nigel Farage's Reform UK outperformed expectations to gain four seats.
So how can the Conservatives recover from this huge defeat? And what policy shifts should we expect from the new government?
After 9:45, we learn more about a new navigation system for the visually impaired.

    9:05am-9:45am: UK elections

9:05am-9:45am: John Bruce, Hong Kong-based Scottish businessman and Founder of Business Risk Consultancy JB Advisory
