On Wednesday's Backchat, we discussed obesity rates in the region.
A study from the mainland's National Health Commission has raised alarm bells, predicting that by 2030 — 65 percent of China’s population could be classified as overweight or even obese.
Experts estimate that treating overweight patients could take up 22 percent of the country's annual health budget, a sharp increase from the 8 percent recorded in 2022.
These statistics have prompted the nation’s top legislative body to intensify efforts to tackle obesity. So what distinguishes obesity from being overweight? Is dietary change a significant factor? And what about lifestyle changes and stress?
In the latter part of the programme, we learned more about the Judicary's pilot scheme which allows for some court proceedings to be broadcast live.
After 9:45, we talked about Web3 development in Hong Kong, and what’s being done to further boost the digital economy.
