"Shrinkflation": time to regulate? / Monkey deaths at Hong Kong zoo

On Wednesday's Backchat, we're talking about the consumer affairs issue known as "shrinkflation".

The Consumer Council has said it conducted a survey involving 62 supermarket products, and found that nearly all of them had been reduced in volume or weight by as much as 30 percent over the past three years, while in some cases prices had risen.
While noting that many of these items were manufactured outside of Hong Kong, the watchdog called on retailers to provide more transparency by labelling changes in size and weight.
Several jurisdictions have taken steps to clamp down on the questionable practice, with France and South Korea requiring traders to display details of such changes on packages or in shops.
    Should Hong Kong follow suit?
After 9:45, we speak to a biological anthropologist about the monkeys which have died at the Hong Kong zoo, some of them endangered species.

Tobacco control / Chinese Culture Festival

    Presenters:Jim Gould and Ada Wong

On Tuesday’s Backchat, we’re talking about anti-smoking policies. The government is planning to table 10 tobacco control measures to the Legislative Council by the end of this year, including a ban on flavoured cigarettes, implementing plain packages for all tobacco products and banning smoking while standing in a queue.

The administration conducted a public consultation on tobacco control last year, with about 90 percent of respondents supporting measures to further reduce smoking prevalence.
But some businesses and legislators have called for delay in introducing the extra restrictions, saying they could have a negative impact on bars and pubs which currently allow smoking in their outside areas, and may also deter sometourists from visiting the city.
So how should public health and economic concerns be balanced? What is the way forward for greater tobacco controls?
After 9:45am, we learn more about a Chinese culture festival being held in Wan Chai, and a campaign promoting Chinese opera.
