Starting next year, patients receiving non-critical and non-emergency care at accident and emergency wards at public hospitals will be required to pay HK$400 per visit, up from the current HK$180. The change is aimed at alleviating the burden on A&E wards and encouraging more non-serious patients to seek treatment in the private sector.

Authorities argue that now is the right time to implement these measures, as semi-urgent and non-urgent patients account for around 60 percent of the cases. The reforms come alongside an increase in the cost of medication fees at public hospitals. Are private practices ready for a potential influx in patients? Will these changes result in more resources being allocated to critical care?
