This week, we'll hear about the first edition of the ART021 HONG KONG Contemporary Art Fair, that’s underway at multiple venues across the city. Then there's Hong Kong’s first-ever Portuguese Sardine Festival that's just kicked off. Is it really just about sardines? Also, food intersects with art again on the show, with soy sauce proving to be no mere condiment for Chinese artist Yang Jiechang. And finally, you can find out all about leather crafting, right here in Hong Kong.

This week, Janice Wong speaks to someone that audiences love to hate: Philip Ng – who plays a particularly vicious villain in the hottest flick in town – Twilight of the Warriors: Walled in. The artistic director of Hong Kong’s first ever International Shakespeare Festival will also tell CultureZine the thinking behind their non-verbal performance of King Lear. What’s more, Janice Wong will take you on a tour of the snuff bottle exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and also the new-look fabric market in Sham Shui Po.

01/06/2024 - Philip Ng - Martial Arts Actor

There’s been a lot of talk about the latest martial arts flick that’s got local movie lovers buzzing. Twilight of the Warriors: Walled in has got a lot going for it – incredible action and choreography, big name actors, a classic Hong Kong martial arts story, and nostalgic callbacks galore, complete with realistic sets of the Kowloon Walled City. But all great martial arts movies needs one absolutely essential ingredient: a compelling villain. And Twilight of the Warriors definitely has one in the form of martial arts actor Philip Ng. But his character isn’t all muscle and menace… he brings a bit of comedy and a lot of flamboyance that makes his character really, really easy to hate. Janice Wong asked him how he did it… but before that she asked him why he thinks audiences have been loving the movie so far:

01/06/2024 - Terry Ng - Assistant Curator (Chinese Antiquities) HKMoA

We here at CultureZine understand that art and culture comes in all shapes and sizes… and so we move from a big budget blockbuster to something much smaller… something that can easily fit in the palm of your hand… snuff bottles. And there’s a terrific display of 490 of these intricate bottles at the Hong Kong Art Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui. They’re from the Fuyun Xuan Collection - an important private collection in Hong Kong established by the late local collector, Christopher Sin. The collection donated by his wife - is the most extensive collection of its kind ever received by a museum in Hong Kong. Terry Ng- the Assistant Curator for Chinese Antiquities at the Hong Kong museum gave Janice Wong a tour of the miniature masterpieces:

01/06/2024 - Tang Shu-wing - Artistic Director of the HK International Shakespeare Festival

Hong Kong’s first international Shakespeare festival kicks off on Wednesday… and one of the highlights is a completely non-verbal performance of King Lear with an all-female cast. The artistic director of the festival Tang Shu-wing told Janice Wong about the thinking behind the show, and also why he decided to bring the festival to Hong Kong:

01/06/2024 - Frances Minji - Local Fashion Designer

Finally, Janice Wong popped down to Sham Shui Po for a tour of the redesigned fabric market there that’s been named Fabrimark. She spoke with the creative mind behind its refresh – France Minji:
