This week, we visit some parrots that have just flown in from the Netherlands - but they’re not real ones. They're giant puppet parrots that have been nesting at Tai Kwun. We speak to a local artist whose work is literally sweet! She's inspired by Chinese sugar painting. And…the panda-monium continues! We visit an art gallery in Sheung wan that’s been invaded by funny surreal panda artwork .

Join Janice Wong this Saturday morning at 9.05 for CultureZine, as she discovers all sorts of fascinating new things about Hong Kong's flourishing arts and culture life.

This week, we’ll find out more about the Freespace Jazz Fest where legendary pianist Herbie Hancock will take the stage in West Kowloon later this month. We’ll hear about the show “Time in a Bottle” at the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo - that includes the composers own perfume bottle collection and a uniquely designed fragrance. Also on the programme we’ll visit a hidden gem in Lai Chi Kok…and how about a pop choral performance at St John’s cathedral?

The Freespace Jazz Festival returns for its sixth edition in October with a four-day celebration of world-class jazz. Both local and international talents including legendary pianist Herbie Hancock, and Ted Lo - Hong Kong’s “godfather of jazz” will take the stage in West Kowloon. Janice Wong spoke earlier to Kung Chi-shing - Head of Contemporary Performance, Performing Art at the West Kowloon Cultural District:

    12/10/2024 - Felix Yeung & Flavian Luk - Moderati

You may not necessarily associate Canto-pop with choir music, but when it’s done with skill and flair… the two go together quite well… And that’s exactly what you’ll get from Moderati – a group of six talented local music arrangers and singers. The all-male community choir group will be putting on a show next Saturday at St John’s Cathedral. The performance will feature a collection of Canto-pop songs with lyrics penned by Chow Yiu Fai. CultureZin’e culture expert Anthony Lui went to one of their rehearsals. He spoke to Felix Yeung and Flavian Luk from the group:

12/10/2024 - Leon Ko - Composer of Time In A Bottle

A few weeks ago when I spoke to Wilfred Wong , the chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Fund Advisory Committee who is also the spokesman for the first Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo, he recommended - Time in a Bottle - a collaboration between a Hong Kong composer and a Japanese set designer. To find out what it’s all about, Janice Wong spoke to Leon Ko - the composer of the show:

12/10/2024 - Kiki Ko - Chief Operating Officer of Jao Tsung I Academy

Finally, on CultureZine we visit a hidden gem in Lai Chi Kok - the Jao Tsung I Academy, to find out more about its history, and how it aims to promote Chinese culture. Its Chief Operating Officer Kiki Ko, showed Janice Wong around:
