This week, we focus on the rise of mini soap operas, which have become major hits on mainland social media and are now making their way into international markets.
Unlike the usual TikTok videos, these mini dramas are professionally produced series with clear storylines and dramatic cliffhangers. Each episode lasts just about a minute, but a full series can include over 50 episodes - keeping millions of viewers hooked. Fueled by changing online consumption habits, the industry saw its revenue soar by 35 percent year-on-year, raking in over 50 billion yuan in 2024. To discuss the rise of mini soap operas, we're joined by Olivia Plotnick, founder of Wai Social in Shanghai.
