Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, plus a few laughs!
(Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am )
This week, all the tunes selected for the show feature numbers in their lyrics. Counting up and counting down with the likes of Billie Holiday, Art Landry, Bonnie Lou, Bill Haley, Don Redman and The Andrews Sisters, performing a version of one of the most famous phone numbers ever recorded.
This week we welcome back to the show our old friend Tom Cord, who played drums with the Victoria Jazz Band, is a former member of the Royal Hong Kong Police, and is fluent in Cantonese...with a Scottish accent. He’s choosing a handful of sides that have meant something to him over years and chats with Colin about his time in Hong Kong in the 70s and 80s. Listen out for music from Earl Hines, Paul Whiteman, Chuck Berry, Nat King Cole, and... The Victoria Jazz Band themselves.

This week, Colin is chatting with special guest Lance Liddle who runs the award winning Jazz blog 'Be-Bop Spoken Here'. Lance chooses some of the outstanding records that have influenced and inspired him over the years, and what a line up he has, including Freddy Randall, Stan Kenton, Stan Getz, Johnny Desmond, and possibly the longest session we’ve ever played on VCT, from The Jazz Couriers.
