Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, plus a few laughs!
(Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am )
Fun on the show this week from the likes of The El Dorados, Sharkey’s New Orleans Boys and Jay Whidden & his band. Some great titles, too, with “Yes She Do, No, She Don’t”, “A Little Dicky Bird Told Me So” and “Why Didn’t William Tell”. Colin also featurse a hugely successful release by Les Baxter his orchestra and chorus, and all round entertainer Milton Berle gives us a turn.
A big feature this week from a record released in 1925. What a recording! Aileen Stanley is The Phonograph Girl together with Gene Austin, and they're getting sweet on each other. A cute (and very positive) number one song from a movie called 'Here Come The Waves' by Johnny Mercer and the pied pipers, a tea break song dedicated from Colin to producer Steve. And, hear a very different arrangement of a huge tune that's usually associated with Harry Belafonte and Stan Freberg, but this time it’s by The Tarriers in 1957. Plus, much more...

This week to Colin chats with John Hallam, who's a collector of vintage instruments. We find out how he got started, and he'll be choosing some absolute Vintage Chart Toppers from the Mills Blue Rhythm Band, Paul Whiteman, Nat Gonella, Geraldo and George Evans, and more. As they go through the various brass instruments in John's amazing collection, Colin gets to see and hold the Hong Kong bugle!
