Art inspired by music. Music inspired by art.
We know that artists can take emotions and atmospheres evoked by sound and interpret them into something visual, as can composers recreate with sound, images from a canvas or other form of visual art. The possibilities are endless… The Culture Show continues to make connections between these two art forms.

DAVID HOCKNEY AND THE STAGE
In this episode we look at David Hockney and his forays into set design. While many of us are familiar with his paintings, his talents were not confined to this medium. His intense love affair with opera has produced some of the most iconic set and stage designs of the modern era.

This month, The Culture Show becomes a source of inspiration for Italian adventures – from Marco Polo to Puccini; La Scala to La Fenice; from the National Museum of Cinema to the Uffizi; from Villa Borghese Gardens, Rome to St Francis Basilica, Arezzo; from Verdi to Farri – discover the places, art, and music that have left an indelible mark on history with my studio guest, the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong, Alice Fratarcangeli.
In this first episode we find out about the work of the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong and talk about one of the most famous Italians to initiate cultural exchange - Marco Polo. 2024 is the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death (8 Jan 1324) and we will hear music inspired by his story - extracts from Tan Dun’s Concerto for Orchestra, a work that describes the exoticism of Marco Polo’s geographical, musical and spiritual journeys.
