Other Specific Services

(a) Typhoon/Bad Weather Radio Announcements

We broadcast updated weather information every 15 minutes when typhoon signal No. 8 or higher is hoisted. If schools need to be closed because of typhoon or bad weather, announcements will normally be made before 6:15 a.m. for morning classes and before 11:00 a.m. for afternoon classes on notification from the Government Information Services or other Government bureaux or departments.All announcements were broadcast on time.

(b) Follow-up Action on Calls to Public Affairs Programmes

Our radio channels offer phone-in programmes for members of the public to air their views on topical issues. All the on-air calls that require action will be followed up - a reply will be given or the matter referred to the appropriate authorities within 10 days.

(c) Captioning of TV Programmes for the Hearing Impaired

We have pledged to provide full subtitling for at least 30% of our annual television output.


2001 225 hours, representing 40.5% of our television output, were captioned.


(d) Advice on Radio Reception

If you have problems with the reception of our radio broadcasts, you can contact our Duty Engineer on 2339 6440 for advice.

About 1 200 enquiries were received through our hotline. Our engineers conducted 145 home visits and handled the rest either over the phone or in writing within 10 days.

An "Easy Reception" campaign was launched in December 2001 to give additional information about radio reception to the public. Over 800 enquiries were received including 141 which required follow-up action.


(e) Video Library

All our prime-time television programmes produced since 1989 are available for free viewing by members of the public. A loan service is also available for non-profit making organisations. For details of this service, please contact our Librarian on 2339 7773. Additionally, a free viewing service is available at over 30 Leisure and Cultural Services Department libraries with Audio-Visual Section.


2001 1 533 loans and viewing sessions were provided to the public.


(f) Audio Archives

Selected radio programmes in the form of half-hour audio cassettes are available for borrowing from the City Hall Library and Shatin Central Library. For more details, please call our Librarian at 2339 6445.


2001 Over 700 borrowings were made from the two libraries.


(g) Service Hotline

The RTHK Service Hotline 2272 0000 was introduced in May 2001 to replace the previous Teleline Service. This new interactive voice response system allows listeners to dial in for radio programmes of any RTHK channels, the latest radio news summary, news bulletins, Legco relay and special channel activities. Users have a choice of three languages (Cantonese, English and Putonghua) and can record their opinions through the system.
